The perfect Curly Concoction?

Posted 01-08-2009 at 11:25 PM by Vermelha
I'm a curly girl in search of the perfect product that is creamy, defines and moisturizes curls.

I know lots of ladies use Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercreme, which has gotten the rave for years, but also gets a bad rep.

They get a bad rep because of their product ingredients. Most curly girls I know aim for something more organic. And when I saw mineral oil, I turned my nose and looked the other way. That and the $58 for it made it that much worse.

I then went on to pursue other products that are more natural/organic and cost less, but just as effective. Eureka! I find Qhemet Biologics through another girl's fotki page. I go online to look them up and, well, they're closed for restocking. I hear their Alma & Olive Heavy Cream is the business... and it costs $16. But will I ever get to try it?

So, I was reading a blog and the lady mentioned Crisco. I'm thinking, er... is this lady bonkers? But, I've never been opposed to anything, so I looked at other forums and saw other's reactions to it. They were mostly opposed, but not as much as MTG or MN (some vaginal cream). I went to the store on a mini-grocery run and saw a 48 oz container for $3. My eyes boggled and I immediately grabbed it, yet hesitated. Then I thought to myself "well, who would know?" So I got it (the off-brand. Regular, no butter flavor, lol).

I get home, wash my hair, scoop up a golf-ball sized dollop of the "shortening" and slapped it on wet, freshly washed hair.

I've never experienced anything that laid my hair down and reduced frizz. Here's the breakdown:

Ingredients: FULLY HYDROGENATED COTTONSEED OIL, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED COTTONSEED AND SOYBEAN OILS, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES.

So, what's so wrong with that? It's a heck of a lot better than Mineral Oil, Petroleum/Petrolatum, Cones, Parabens and other additives/fillers. More breakdown:

1. It's not greasy. It's acutally fluffy.
2. It doesn't smell like butter, chicken, fish or any fried food.
3. It doesn't smell at all.
4. It's not heavy to wash out.
5. I don't look like I have a Jheri curl.
6. My hair is still moisturized 8 hours later.
7. It lays hair down instantly like the best hair gel I've ever had.

I've been growing my hair as a hobby for years now. As I fully approach BSL next month, I've tried everything and this is what I've been looking for.

So ask yourself; do you really want to spend $$$ on a product that has extra fillers and someone's name on it? Are the products you're using even benefiting your hair? Just because it's in the hair care isle you'd opt to buy it over something as simple and already made? Do you have to have a pretty label and spend more than $10 for a product to be usable to you? And people call me crazy for spending $3 for 48 oz.....

All I can say is people thought Olive Oil was ridiculous to use. And now, look at all the ladies across the world that's doing it.

Once upon a time, you were crazy to put eggs in your hair for a protein treatment. Let alone Avocados, Cayenne pepper, Bananas and Mayonnaise.

Honestly, I'd opt for anything that's organic and/or natural and doesn't have the inorganic chemicals that can actually harm you.

If you think I'm crazy, that's fine. I'll be crazy, with long WL hair one day. And when people ask for my secret, I'll let it all out; I use Crisco (well, I may not tell anyone, but still).

i have tried "vegetable oil" because it is just another name for soybean oil and it is one of my main ingredients in my hair butter. i might have to check this specific one out. maybe the cottonseed oil makes a huge difference in the way the soybean oil reacts on the hair. thanks for the tip.

Sounds interesting and for $3, it can't hurt to experiment. Thanks for the review!
