Exfoliating Scalp Treatment: Just like you exfoliate your skin, your scalp will be exfoliated during an exfoliating scalp treatment. A scrub type product will be used to remove product buildup, dead skin, and promote faster turnover for younger healthier skin cells on the scalp. Alternatively, alpha and beta hydroxy acids could be used as the exfoliants as opposed to a mechanical exfoliants.
Revitalizing Scalp Treatment: This is more of a relaxing process, but it also stimulates blood flow to the scalp and good circulation is key for hair growth. Usually during this type of treatment the scalp is massaged for a good 30 minutes with essential oils. Now if this is added on prior to a shampoo and deep condition, it might be considered a pre-poo as well because oils will be used.
Scalp Massages as a Scalp Treatment: Very similar to the revitalizing types of scalp treatments because most revitalizing treatments include a massage. The difference is that the term scalp massage may be without any type of oil added.
Based on this information I think that scalp treatments can be both relaxing and beneficial to hair growth and hair care, however I do not think that they are essential. Maintaining a healthy scalp is essential, so please do not misunderstand what I am saying. However, add on scalp treatments at the salon or spa are not a necessity, but rather a luxury that I can't wait to try out. :-)
