View Full Version : Why does my Wave Nouveau look so much like a Jheri Curl?

I got the Wave Nouveau with the hopes that it would make my hair long and wavy. But it looks more like a Jheri Curl.

And I hate it when people say its a Jheri Curl.

I read around in some sites and people were saying how their Wave Nouveau looked nothing like a Jheri Curl.

Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Here are some pics:

Whats the deal with this?

Or is this the way its supposed to look?

I can see how people can mistake it for a JC but it doesnt look THAT much like one. Maybe if it was longer people would think differently, I would think that a JC would be a little tighter..

It looks good to me. Maybe she should have used a different size rods so it wouldn't be tight. I know a lady that has one I love her hair. are you putting to much activator or what ever it is you are suppose to put on it?

No. I'm using the right amount.

But I think I know what the problem is. I was using an afro pics to comb my hair instead of a wide tooth comb.

Could that be the problem?

hmmmm...maybe you can use no activator, and that will take away the jheri look. It would be like a soft wave, with no juices...

or you can try something like (hawaiian silky), they have an activator spray for the dry/relaxed look?

I agree. They should have used looser rods. But I think it looks really good though! I would probably braid this up at night after washing in big braids to create the looser wave. But when it gets longer and heavier, the curl will loosen and turn into a wave.

But I really like it though!

But like to switch between looks.

So If I have tight curls like the way I have it in those pics, do you think I can loosen the curls to look like this?:

Or this

http://mjjgallery.free.fr/dangerous/appearances/superbowl/025.jpg

If you look, you can see it is almost straight, with a little wave to it.

Now you mentioned braiding it. If I comb it with a wide tooth comb and braid it at night, do you think its possible to loosen the curls up it make it as wavy as MJ in those pics? Because I use an afro pic in those pics. So that will make my curls tight if I'm not mistaken.

And if not, what could I do?

If you braid it and put a little product in it (like mousse or setting lotion, while damp) it will give it the loose wavy look. Just put a bunch of plaits all around your head how you want your hair to lay, then take it down in the morning. Don't use an afro pik. Just your hands. HTH.

Ok. thanks.

And if I want the more tight curl look. I should just not braid it and it should get tighter.

If you just wash your hair and let it airdry (with a tad bit of hair gel) it should be tighter and more defined. HTH.

Another thought.

I thought braiding your hair gives you that kind of crimpy look. And it makes your hair more curly or wave withing the curl?

If you put big braids/plaits in, with your curl, it should produce a softer, bigger wave. Smaller braids/plaits would just make the hair crimped, especially on relaxed hair. Do them, but don't do them too tight, as to not get a crunchy look.

I was also thinking today. Look at MJ's hair here:

http://mjjgallery.free.fr/bad/awards/soultrain/011.jpg

Now with a wave nouveau, is it possible to use rollers in your hair to make your hair straighter or curlier at any time?

Like for example, if I had tight curls and I wanted to make it straight like in that pic, instead of braiding it, could I just but like BIG rollers in my hair and but some gel or something in there and let it sit overnight to make it more straight?

And if I wanted to get tighter curls again I could just get SMALL rollers and do the same thing?

Do you think thats possible?

Yes. The bigger the roller, the straighter the hair. If you want looser hair texture, put the big rollers in with setting lotion (gel takes a while to dry, but a little bit won't hurt). But do it on wet hair to get the best set.

Here's what you'll do:

Wash and condition your hair.
Then, apply your setting lotion (Lottabody has great hold, but wrap lotion will do. Light gel will work also). Apply all over the hair.
Then section hair and put in the rollers (Again, big rollers for straigher, wavier, looser hair; small rollers fo tighter curl).
Let it air dry overnight or sit under a blowdryer.
In the morning, if the hair is still a bit wet, dont' take them out. If you do, the style will frizz and or kink. Make sure it is completely dry first.

Enjoy. If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask!

Ok. I have 3 questions.

1. Now is the setting lotion like a relaxer or something? Because I don't want anything to wear my hair out.

2. Take a look at these products made for Wave Nouveau: SoftSheen-Carson - Wave Nouveau Coiffure (http://www.softsheen-carson.com/_us/_en/products/permanentwave/wavenouveaucoiffure.aspx) Would any of these work for the effect or no? And which ones would you suggest I use for everyday use for loose and tight curls?

3. And Can this all be done with extensions in my hair?

Also. I read that you could put mousse in your hair then put big rollers in then spray it with a spray.

IS that true?

I think it looks really cute in the pics you posted. Maybe people say its a jherri curl because they just don't know the right term for it.
